One of the most authentic and engaging genre with entertainment in Bollywood is Gangster genre. Since Godfather in Hollywood in 1972, there was a huge rage in this particular genre which was later adopted by Bollywood with their own taste of Gangsters. Since many antihero roles in mid 70s mostly starring Amitabh Bachchan was liked by audiences but the real life gangsters persona was missing in the movie.
A lot of directors had fantasized about gangsters and had successfully created a great underworld factor on screen. Directors like Ram Gopal Verma, Anurag Kashyap and few others. Today I will be talking about some real life gangsters based movies in Bollywood.
1. Company
The 2002 film by Ram Gopal Verma was totally based on relationship between mobsters Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan. Once very close and many operations took place when both the individuals were in the same unit until 1993 Bombay blast. That was masterminded by Ibrahim with the backing up with ISI. The entire movie was set up in Bombay with Ajay Devgn playing mentor to Vivek Oberoi and both were highly celebrated for their real portrayals.
2. Black Friday
Based on the book of same name released in 2003 directed by Anurag Kashyap is considered as the most accurate and cinema based on real life characters. The movie averagely based on 1993 Mumbai blast and is even disturbed today puts light on the reason and motive of the characters responsible for the dreadful act. It shows how Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Menon planned and executed the serial blast.
3. Once Upon A Time In Mumbai
This film throws light on the time when Mumbai Underworld were slowly growing under the leadership of Hazi Mastan. He was active between 1960s to 1970s. The characters portrayed by the actors like Ajay Devgn as Hazi Mastan and Imraan Hashmi as Dawood Ibrahim were over the top yet very authentic. The story of an individual who was smuggler and real estate businessman functions very carefully and was ultimate leader.
4. Satya
One of the very first authentic gangster film by Ram Gopal Verma in 1998. The film was inspired by a person who used to live in the same building as of verma's friend. Sometimes they used to meet and greet each other in lift and after a while they got to know that man was arrested for murder. This inspired director to make a film on a gangster with all his daily life incidents and how normally they act in front of people. Starring great talents like Manoj Bajpayee and Saurav Sukhla which made their career act so convincingly that people called them with characters named Viku Mahatre and Kallu Mama respectively.
5. Gangs Of Wasseypur
It is 2012 Indian 2 part crime film directed by Anurag Kashyap. Centered in Mafia of Dhanwad, the power struggles, politics and avenges between crime families written by Zeishan Quadri who lived majority of his life in Wasseypur got inspiration from the real life people from particular place and their hunger for power and throne. Son of Fahim Khan who was portrayed as Faisal Khan played by Nawazzuddin Shiddhiqui and Safiq Khan aka Sardar Khan was really shot in petrol station ans was portrayed in same way in the film. The film shows about three families: Ramadhir Singh and son, Shahid Khan and sons and Sultan Qureshi. Totally cinematic treat this movie is undoubtedly the best Gnagster film in Bollywood.
